Liz Adamson, Brevard, NC Nia Blue Belt. I fell in love with Nia at first sight when I walked into Denise Medved's Nia class; bare feet (ahhh) and African music pulsating, energized bodies moving with joy and freedom to simple steps. To my surprise ( I was shy, dyslexic and used to hiding!) I became a teacher, amazed at the transformations possible in body, mind, emotions and spirit that take place daily in Nia classes. Over six years have passed and I still am in awe of this technique and continue to learn of its deep healing gifts. Nia has kept me and so many others alive and well and I am most grateful! Tamara (rhymes w/ sara) Albright
was first introduced to the bliss of personal,
creative movement at a Grateful Dead concert in 1990. The comfort,
ease and individuality surrounding Tamara inspired within her the understanding that she too could allow her body to dance in it's own way. And that way was nothing less than beautiful. This experience of creativity, joy, unity, music and movement opened a profound pathway to continuing personal expression.

Over the years, spiritual discovery, art, natural foods, yoga and aromatherapy created a synergy of well-being practices that became a cornerstone in Tamara's personal development. Yet, she still craved to connect with others in music, dance and freedom. Traveling the east coast, she attended countless music festivals and concerts seeking and living moments of pure bliss.

Landing in Asheville to be closer to her niece, Tamara discovered Nia at the downtown YMCA in 2006. Nia provided her with an incredible, consistent and reliable outlet for connecting to spirit, self and community all while shakin' her booty! YAY! She received her Nia white belt in September 2007 and is looking forward to dancing with you soon! Contact Tamara at 828.551.5017 or

Connie Byrne has always had a passion for exercise. From the time she was a little girl, Connie's favorite place to be was outside climbing trees, riding her bike, skiing, hiking, or otherwise enjoying the wondrous feeling that comes from joyously interacting with nature.

A car accident in 2000 and years of painful recovery forced Connie to make significant changes in her life. She retired from her successful corporate career in IT management and consulting, and retreated to the mountains of North Carolina. The forced retirement was a blessing in disguise. Connie finally had the opportunity to truly begin the process of healing.

The one thing that had helped her in her three year quest for relief from constant pain was a movement class she took in Charlotte. Upon her arrival in Brevard, Connie searched for a similar class. She knew that organic systemic movement was the key that unlocked the door to her healing. She heard about this class called Nia, and decided to give it a try. After the first class she drove home ecstatic - she knew she had found her way back to health.

Over a period of six months the improvement in Connie's physical and emotional health was dramatic. This improvement was the catalyst to becoming a Nia instructor. The pain and fibromyalgia that had forced her into retirement was now almost gone. The Joy she felt when doing Nia lifted her spirits. Connie could not wait to share this with others. In April of 2005, Connie became a certified Nia instructor and is currently teaching Nia in several locations in Brevard, North Carolina. Contact Connie at 828-883-8972 or by email at nia@citcom.net.

Lia Collman is an enthusiastic Nia instructor, who was introduced to Nia in 1997 when searching for an exercise class that would help her lower back pain. The idea of a whole body workout coupled with fun was very appealing. She brings elements of play and fun to each class, healing through awareness and the joy of movement.

Lia received her White Belt training in 2000 with Denise Medved in Hendersonville, NC and her Blue Belt with Nia creators, Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas, in October 2006. She teaches Nia classes locally and enjoys co-creating special group events with other local Nia instructors.

In addition to teaching Nia, Lia continues sharing health and wellness in her Shaklee business through nutritional supplementation, environmentally safe household cleaners, and air and water purification. Her health has changed dramatically for the better over the last few years thanks to Nia and Shaklee's high quality supplements. Ondine Constable In my mid 40's, after many years of a sedentary lifestyle, I wanted to get in shape, feel good, and add some pizazz to my life. I discovered Nia, and my life changed! I quickly lost some extra weight, my muscle tone and flexibility improved. Because Nia is gentle on the joints, my chronically sprained ankle stopped hurting for the first time in years. But what thrilled me the most, Nia is a deliciously fun way to get an invigorating aerobic workout that is joyful and expressive.

Now as a teacher I love the fact that Nia provides a safe way for people of ALL fitness levels to enjoy exercising. Whether you're new to exercising or are an athlete, Nia provides holistic conditioning.

In addition to Nia classes, I offer personalized nutritional assessments designed by doctors, skin health care, and employee recognition & incentive programs. Email: ondine_nia_fit@yahoo.com Toll-free: (866) 703-242 www.oconstable.qhealthzone.com

Heather Frisbie is sure she has danced Nia in former lifetimes.  That is how familiar this technique seemed to me.  My love affair with Nia began when I danced my first class in January 2005.  I hesitantly attended class because I was friends with the instuctor, and she had personally invited me.  I was recovering from Espstein-Barr Virus, and was frightened that I would not have the stamina to keep up.  I danced for an hour, returned home and couldn't believe how great I felt!  Later that week I found myself using sounding and movements from class to deal with everyday life. Since then, Nia and a modified diet have been my path for healing my achy joints and chronic fatigue.  Nia is a lifestyle that evolves from an exercise routine.  I'm still amazed how much it teaches me about myself.  Join me dancing through life.  Contact Heather at 828-258-8045 or heatherfrisbie@bellsouth.net

Natalie Grinnell, As someone who's been dancing through life since birth, when I found Nia I certainly felt like so many others who say they found what they'd been looking for all their lives. My parents have pictures of me dancing with my Donnie and Marie Osmond microphone from the time I could walk and talk, and tell stories of me dancing in the aisles when they took me to see Grease for the first time. After years of dance classes from the age of 3, I feared my opportunities to dance would be severely limited upon college graduation and entrance into the world of working adults. My fears were dispelled the moment I took my first Nia class. The strong, organic and expressive movements and non-competitive feel to the class had me at hello!

Feeling a strong desire to share this joy with others, I received my White Belt training in November 2003 and started teaching in 2004. In addition to my joy of teaching, I am a performer at heart. I am most blessed to sing with The Muses, an a cappella trio that includes myself, Judy Rhodes and Gail Forsyth. You can check us out at www.ashevillemuses.com . I also help people feel more beautiful both as a freelance make up artist and with MAC cosmetics. You may reach me at nrg@charter.net or at (828) 275 5377

Maureen Jablinske,  rousing sensations deep in my core, first dancing Maurean JablinskeNia in the late 1990s, I knew I had arrived home and met my tribe. YES!

Around the same time, I lost my job and began seeking clues as to my next move. Inspired by a question in Wish Craft, I asked myself, Where do you find joy? The answer came clearly: DANCE!

Shortly after, I was certified to teach Nia, training with Holly Curtis in Austin, October 1998. I trained further with co-creators Debbie and Carlos Rosas in October 2000. I completed Brown Belt training in 2006.

Before leaving Austin, I thoroughly explored her rich dance community, enjoying Nia classes, workshops, playshops, as well as yoga, Trance and African dance, Soul Motion, Five Rhythms, Body Choir, toning, and other practices. Vibrational healing especially resonates with me.

I am dedicated to sharing Nia as a vehicle for fitness, self-healing, and personal transformation. I love the multidimensional aspects of Nia and am honored to share her with you. I invite you to be your own teacher, to open to sensation, notice without judging, and explore your body's innate wisdom. Contact Maureen via email at MaureeNia@Charter.net .

Louise Rezac, Ph.D., A dancer in the Atlanta Ballet as a teen, Louise continued to exercise as an adult but never felt the lost joy of dance until she tried Nia at age 61. She had been struggling to regain fitness after a long illness, and she immediately felt more energized without soreness or fatigue after class. More importantly, Nia felt like a lost treasure, a way of movement that restored hope in the prospect of healing and vigorous aging.

Since training for her White Belt in 2005, Dr. Louise has retired from her practice of psychology of 28 years. As a Nia teacher, she brings her extensive knowledge of positive mental process and healthy aging to her classes. With all ages facing the likelihood of longer lives, Louise is enthusiastic about Nia as a safe, inspiring and joyous way to improve health and quality of life.

Louise is proud to present Nia as the first class offering at the Saluda Senior Center's beautiful new Wellness/Fitness facility. Although she offers special attention to the needs of Seniors, all ages are welcome at her classes; and she loves sharing with all of her students Nia's Joy of Movement.
